Why Self-Care Often Doesn’t Work (And What Actually Helps)

Self-care is talked about everywhere, but for many people, it still doesn’t feel like it works. You try something that’s supposed to help, maybe it feels good for a moment or a day, and then life picks back up right where it left off.

It’s not that you’re doing self-care wrong. It’s that much of what we’re shown isn’t designed to last.
A lot of self-care is presented as something extra. Something you add on when you have time. But if it only fits into the rare, open spaces of your life, it’s not going to support you when things feel full, stressful, or overwhelming.
At New Rhythms, we think about self-care a little differently. Megan Korthals, LPC-S, has spent much of her time researching quality self-care and describes effective self-care as something that is nourishing, authentic, realistic, and sustainable. When those pieces are in place, self-care becomes something that actually integrates into your life instead of sitting just outside of it.
Nourishing self-care restores you. Not everything that looks like self-care actually meets that need. Sometimes what helps most isn’t escape or distraction, but something that brings you back to feeling grounded, connected, and more like yourself.
Authentic self-care fits you. What works for someone else may not work for you. Self-care becomes meaningful when it reflects your values, your personality, and your actual needs, not what you think you “should” be doing.

Realistic self-care works within your life. If it requires too much time, energy, or planning, it becomes difficult to return to. The most effective practices are often simple enough to fit into your everyday rhythm.
Sustainable self-care lasts over time. It isn’t meant to be a one-time reset. Small, consistent practices tend to support you more than occasional, big efforts that are hard to maintain.
When self-care includes all of these elements, it starts to feel less like a task and more like a rhythm.
If self-care hasn’t felt like it’s worked for you in the past, you’re not alone. It may just need to look a little different.
