What Self-Care Really Looks Like (And Why It’s More Than You Think)

When most people hear “self-care,” they think of a day off or a bubble bath. Those things matter, but they’re only part of the picture. At New Rhythms, we view self-care as something more complete—something that supports how you live, connect, and move through your life.

There are six domains of self-care that help keep us grounded and well.

Wooden spoon with honey, a round stone with green leaves, and a lit candle on a white wooden surface, creating a serene atmosphere.

Physical Self-Care is caring for your body through rest, movement, nourishment, and breath. It’s noticing tension and choosing to pause instead of pushing through.

Professional (Life-Balance) Self-Care is how you relate to your responsibilities. It includes boundaries and the ability to be present where you are, rather than feeling pulled between work and home.

Relational Self-Care is being intentional about who has access to your time and energy. Not every relationship is meant to hold the same level of closeness, and healthy connection includes clear boundaries.

Emotional Self-Care is noticing what you feel and giving it space without judgment. It may look like naming an emotion or expressing it creatively.

Psychological Self-Care invites reflection. It’s the ability to step back, notice your thoughts, and consider the stories you’re telling yourself.

Spiritual Self-Care is about meaning and connection—whatever grounds you, whether that’s faith, nature, or a sense of inner peace.

Self-care doesn’t have to be complicated. Often, it begins with paying attention. That’s why we created Self-Care Saturday, a space to slow down and experience these areas in a way that feels practical and personal. You’ll move through simple, self-guided stations designed to help you reconnect with your body, reflect on balance, consider your relationships, express emotions, gain insight, and reconnect with what matters most.

Various small cacti and succulents are potted in wooden cubes on a wooden table. Background includes orange pots, creating a rustic vibe.

Complete at least five of the six stations and you’ll be invited to our final “Intentional Growth” station, where you can plant a small succulent as a reminder of what you want to nurture moving forward.

Saturday, May 2nd, you can also enjoy the energy of the ETX Market. Start your morning with outdoor yoga at 9:15, peruse the market, and then step into a space for intentional self-care at New Rhythms Therapeutic Center. It’s an opportunity to move at your own pace, connect with your community, and take a meaningful pause in your day.

If you’ve been feeling stretched or simply in need of a reset, this is an invitation to slow down and care for yourself in a way that lasts. Buy an early bird ticket and be entered to win a free 30-minute massage at New Rhythms: Buy Self-Care Saturday Tickets
