Counseling Options for Children: Finding the Right Fit

Every child’s emotional world is unique, and sometimes they need extra support to navigate big feelings, life changes, or challenges at home or school. Counseling can provide children with a safe place to express themselves, build coping skills, and develop confidence as they grow. At New Rhythms Therapeutic Center (NRTC), we offer a range of approaches designed to meet children where they are developmentally and emotionally.

Play Therapy: A Child’s Language of Healing

Play therapy is one of the most effective ways for children to process emotions and experiences. Through play, children can communicate feelings they may not yet have words for. Toys, art materials, and creative activities become tools for expression, helping children build confidence, improve communication, and work through difficult experiences in a supportive environment.

New Rhythms is proud to have Registered Play Therapists on staff who provide specialized play therapy services. At the same time, many counselors receive extensive education and training in play-based approaches as part of their professional development. These clinicians can provide quality play-informed counseling and help families access referrals to Registered Play Therapists when more specialized care is appropriate.

At NRTC, children also benefit from dedicated play spaces designed to be both safe and flexible. Our therapy rooms allow counselors to adapt the environment to meet the needs of the child, whether that involves creative play, sensory activities, or quiet conversation.

Beyond Play Therapy

While play therapy is a wonderful option, it is not the only way children can benefit from counseling. Depending on the child’s age, needs, and personality, sessions may incorporate:

  • Expressive arts such as drawing, music, or movement

  • Cognitive-behavioral strategies to help children understand thoughts and behaviors

  • Family-focused sessions that strengthen parent-child connection

  • Skill-building activities for emotional regulation and problem-solving

A Team Committed to Serving Children Well

All counselors at New Rhythms are committed to serving our community with care and professionalism. Our team regularly pursues continuing education to strengthen the support we offer children and families. Recent training completed by staff include trauma-informed play techniques and incorporating sensory work into sessions with children.

In addition, the New Rhythms team has engaged in Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) training, an approach that emphasizes connection, empowerment, and healthy structure when supporting children. This training will continue as part of our commitment to providing thoughtful, informed care.

Meeting a Community Need

In East Texas, there is a clear gap in suitable counseling options for children. Families often face waitlists that extend far longer than what is reasonable for a child who needs support. NRTC has recognized this need and remains dedicated to helping close that gap so children can access quality counseling in a timely way.

The safety and healing of our community includes its youngest members, and we are honored to be part of that work.

Supporting Children and Families

Counseling can help children not only heal but thrive. Whether through play, creativity, skill-building, or family support, our goal at New Rhythms is to help children and families develop resilience, strengthen relationships, and create new rhythms of well-being together.
