The Meaning Behind the name "New Rhythms"

ree

Dear Friends, Clients, and Partners,

My co-founder Katie and I are already blown away by the support we have received in this venture from you and the community. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Starting New Rhythms Therapeutic Center has been a deeply personal and meaningful journey for us. Your encouragement, belief in our vision, and willingness to walk this path with us have been both humbling and inspiring.

When we first began discussing our vision for the practice, finding a meaningful name was paramount. It felt similar to each time I have named a child, a task filled with a mix of excitement, reflection, and responsibility. This name would encapsulate our identity as therapists, reflect the journey that brought us here, and express the aspirations we hold for the future. We wanted a name that felt authentic, resonant, and full of hope—a name that could inspire and guide both us and those we serve.

A lot of suggestions were thrown around, and nothing seemed quite right, until the word "Rhythm" was suggested by my husband. The concept of "rhythm" spoke to something deep within me, evoking memories of my years immersed in ballet. Dance shaped my early life, and taught me how to move through life with intentionality, to adapt to challenges with poise, and to find beauty in both structure and spontaneity. These lessons have stayed with me, influencing not just who I am but how I approach the art of healing.

The meaning behind the word did not stop there. "Rhythm" transcends my personal connection to dance and perfectly encapsulates my therapeutic approach. I believe that all good therapy should be like a dance. Therapy should be simultaneously structured and creative. Good therapists should be open and flexible while also trained to execute interventions skillfully. Therapy is nurturing and challenging, requiring gentle strength to guide clients through the healing process.

Our name also honors my co-founder, Katie, whose green thumb brings vibrancy and warmth to our space in a way I could never achieve. When you walk into our office, you are immediately greeted by Katie’s thoughtful touch—a sanctuary filled with lush, thriving plants that symbolize life, resilience, and growth. Each plant has been lovingly chosen and cared for, serving as a living testament to the nurturing spirit we aim to embody in our practice. Tending to these living things requires an attunement to nature’s cycles—a recognition of the ever-changing rhythms of our environment and the patience to honor growth at its own pace. This harmony with the natural world reflects our commitment to creating a space that fosters healing, balance, and renewal.

Finally, Katie and I established this center with the goal of becoming East Texas’ premier center for truly holistic, trauma-responsive, and attachment-focused care. I have come to believe that treating trauma is about changing patterns in our bodies, in our relationships with ourselves and others, and in the systems around us. Those who have experienced trauma—whether seemingly “small” difficulties, large life-threatening events, or complex traumas over time—carry rhythms ingrained in their brains and bodies that create a lack of felt-safety. True healing occurs when we are able to establish safety within ourselves, with loved ones, and with the world around us. Healing is, therefore, living a “new rhythm.”

At New Rhythms Therapeutic Center, our mission is to guide you through this transformative process. We are here to support you in rediscovering joy and cultivating connections that nurture your growth and resilience.

Thank you for joining us on this journey. Your trust and belief in our vision mean everything to us. We can’t wait to grow and heal alongside you.

Warmly,

Megan Korthals, LPC-S, Co-Founder
